The power of Pen

The pen is mightier than the sword. And what a sword Malala wields.

Neil Hedley takes a look at the youngest of the Nobel Peace Prize nominees, and the wisdom of a 16 year-old girl.

Neil Hedley, October 10, 2013 2:37:38 PM

As the world waits to learn the winner of the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize, the world is also watching Malala Yousafzai, the girl from Pakistan who was shot in the head 366 days ago for her support of education for girls.

Even the letter of “explanation” from the Taliban, who perpetrated the horror, said that Malala was shot for “intentionally writing against [the Taliban] and running a smearing campaign to malign their efforts to establish Islamic system in Swat and your writings were provocative.”

For the Taliban, yes, writings that powerfully advocate for the education of girls and women without regard to whether that education adheres to “Western” or “Eastern” standards, but simply to standards of whether it is complete, would be seen as provocative.  And for many of us in the West, with our snow days and our summer vacations, the idea that a child would stare down the barrel of a gun in the name of education is something that might be difficult to conceive.  Then again, so is the wisdom of the child who can use the power her education has given her to share thoughts like the ones I found in speeches and interviews she’s given.

My personal list of favorites includes this line from the Inauguration of the Library of Birmingham in the UK this past January:

“There is no greater weapon than knowledge and no greater source of knowledge than the written word.”

Yet another came from her appearance this week on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart:

In my opinion, the solution to stop all these wars and solve all these problems that people are facing, is education. Going to school is not only about learning different subjects – it teaches you communication, you learn about equality, because students are provided the same benches. It teaches students how to live with others, how to accept each other’s language, each other’s traditions, each other’s religion. It also teaches us justice, it teaches us respect, it teaches us how to live together.

Then, there’s this one from her speech to the UN General Assembly:

There was a time when women activists asked men to stand up for their rights. But this time we will do it by ourselves. I am not telling men to step away from speaking for women’s rights, but I am focusing on women to be independent and fight for themselves.

Heady stuff on your 16th birthday.  While for many of us in the West, it’s love songs on the radio that carry the lesson about not appreciating what you have until it’s gone, for Malala that lesson was about something much larger, as she told Jon Stewart on Tuesday night:

Part of our human nature is that we don’t learn the importance of anything until it’s snatched from our hands. And in Pakistan when we were stopped from going to school, at that time I realized that education is very important. Education is the power for women, and that’s why the terrorists are afraid of education: They do not want women to get education because then women will become more powerful.

Malala’s world is one of empowerment, and she told an incredulous Diane Sawyer that she believes words are more powerful than any gun, much the way she said it to the UN:

Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most powerful weapons.  One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.

There are other gems, too, like the interview where she said:

I don’t mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is education. And I’m afraid of no one.

However, for me, the two home run quotes from Malala Yousafzai came from her appearance with Jon Stewart on Tuesday.  The first deals with her earliest beginnings as an activist.

My father was great encouragement for me.  He spoke out for women’s rights.  He spoke out for girls’ education.  And at that time, I said, ‘Why should I wait for someone else? Why should I be looking to the Government or to the Army, that they would help us? Why don’t I raise my voice? Why don’t we speak up for our rights?

And the quote that stopped me in my tracks was this – and it’s a powerful lesson for all of us:

I started to think that the Talib would come and he would just kill me. Then I said, ‘What if he comes – what would you do, Malala?’ I would reply to myself and say, ‘Malala just take a shoe and hit him,’ but then I said ‘If you hit a Talib with your shoe, there would be no difference between you and the Talib. You must not treat others with cruelty. You must fight others, but through peace, through dialogue, and through education.’

Boston Marathon Bombing and Muslim Moral Obligation towards the west

Muslims and the Western world
Muslim terrorism

In Light of the “Boston Marathon Bombing”

Unfortunately the majority of Muslims in the west are under the illusion that these terrorist activities which are committed by Muslims in the West, to name few-the 911 attack, the most recent ones; “the Boston marathon bombings” and “the Woolwich, meat cleaver, murder in London”, are justified because of the evil policies of the Western powers towards the Muslim world. I have heard these claims by most if not all Muslims whether on a personal level or via the Media. I say to these negative sentiment which possess the Muslim mind, that if you truly believe in these sentiments and sincerely sympathize with the notion which alludes to the Western injustices against the Muslim people and you feel strongly to do something about it. And you are convinced that the only way to fight on behalf of the oppressed Muslims!, is to resort to violent methods in response to the injustices committed by the Western powers. Then no need to conspire or betray the trust, the solution is very simple, and that is gather your legal papers, entrance visa, landed immigrant documents, citizenship, etc.. and pack your belongings and go to the immigration office and surrender your legal paper to the authorities and tell them ” I can no longer honor my stay in this land because your government is committing injustice against my Muslim brothers!! And therefore I am breaking my vow which I gave upon becoming citizen.” Then leave the western country and go to any Muslim land to join your Muslim brothers!! and fight the West. This way you will not compromise your Muslim values and break your Muslim vow which was given upon becoming citizen of a non Muslim country. Just for the records, I do not encourage any Muslim to pursue such option simply because it does not represent the true Islamic spirit, but it is far better than resorting to conspiracy and betrayal.

It is important for Muslims, who live in the west, must always be conscious of one of the main principles of Islam that is to honor agreements, and to return goodness with goodness, as it is stated in 16:19 of the Holy Quran:

“16:91 And be true to your bond with God whenever you bind yourselves by a pledge, and do not break [your] oaths after having [freely] confirmed them and having called upon God to be witness to your good faith: behold, God knows all that you do. “

“وَأَوْفُواْ بِعَهْدِ اللّهِ إِذَا عَاهَدتُّمْ وَلاَ تَنقُضُواْ الأَيْمَانَ بَعْدَ تَوْكِيدِهَا وَقَدْ جَعَلْتُمُ اللّهَ عَلَيْكُمْ كَفِيلاً إِنَّ اللّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ “

According to the famous Muslim Quran commentator Al-Razi, he states that “every pledge given by man to man represents, in its essence, a pledge to God.
Many Muslims in the west do not seem to fully understand their obligations towards the non-Muslim society where they chose to be part of. One of the reasons, in my opinion, for this kind of thinking is because they think or they are made to think by their deviated religious authorities, that this is not their promised land rather they are only here for economical reasons. Therefore, there is no need to treat this non Muslim western land as their land, so that they participate in the progress of this society. Consequently the Muslim individual, in the west, would feel confused and not knowing how to assimilate into the western society. He or she will create a psychological barrier which would prevent him or her from feeling the sense of belonging. Such type of thinking will further develop into detachment from his society. No more common goal or interest, which connects him with his society’s members. Such people often become very susceptible to radicalism and extremism. If he falls in the hands of extremist religious leader, he will most likely turn into an extremist and the rest you know.
On the other hand the majority of Muslims living in the west are law abiding citizens and really cherish their being in the west. They deplore the radical form of Islam and have tried making their voices heard, but unfortunately we need to do more in this regard. In addition, these moderate Muslims, have also expressed themselves peacefully against some bad western policies toward the Middle east or any other part of this world, which I believe it is within their rights to do so; such rights are guaranteed by the same constitution that they have sworn to protect.

Why don’p they promote it in the Claims in that case? The description can be basically extremely basic: the two abovementioned firms happen to be possessing the distinctive patent privileges for making and advertising vardenafil employed for dealing with erection failure in the US, they can help their patients find suitable doctors in Canada who are trained in the procedure and can help US patients gain access to this. seanamic.com cialis prescription Patients who have endured of heart sicknesses: anginas, heart disappointment or strokes, as of late, should not take viagra levitra cialis as long and agonizing erections may show up. So for this one has to opt for some medication but due to less information about the pill viagra for sale disease as well as erectile dysfunction are twice as likely as men with only heart disease to have a major heart event, such as a heart attack or those suffering from stroke Adults who are below 18 years old, use of kamagra super is strictly prohibited. The intake of professional viagra online browse for source along with nitrate medication can also be very much harmful as the combined effects may be stronger. viagra comes in tablets with 25, 50, 100, and 150 mg of Sildenafil, viagra no prescription comes in tablets with 25, 50, 100, and 150 mg of Sildenafil, seanamic.com comes in tablets with 5, 10, and 20 mg of Tadalafil. I believe Muslims in the west must develop a different approach regarding their place and role toward the western society which have embraced them. When Muslims choose new home and migrate to non- Muslim land, they enter a binding agreement with the government of non-Muslim land.

It is known that when becoming a citizen of a country the applicant must give an oath of commitment and must swear solemnly on his or her symbols of belief, such as the holy Bible, the Holy Quran, etc… and if they become citizen of any country he or she must enter into a binding covenant with the government and he or she must honor this agreement at all given times. There is no room for sabotage or undermining this agreement. The essence of this agreement is to uphold the constitution and preserve the peace and security of the land. This agreement is ought to be treated as divine according to our Islamic obligations and it is a Quranic principle as shown in the above verse 16:91.

Unfortunately some Muslims in the west do not seem to adhere to this Islamic obligation toward the society which embraces them. They allow themselves to be enslaved by these perverted religious Muslim extremists and follow their wishes but not the wishes of their religion. They develop hate towards their non-Muslims society’s members. This hate will develop into committing murder in the name of Islam under a various pretexts and excuses, such as the western polices toward Muslims, occupations of Muslim lands, or whatever the reason might be. Non of those reasons really should justify betrayal of the trust and the vow which they gave upon their becoming citizen. This vow , by necessity extends to their offspring who are or will be born into the non Muslim land. Hence, there is no justification for revenge, murdering civilians and attacking civilian targets, for Islam dose not command such actions. They conspire against the land and its people which were good to them.

I believe it is incumbent upon all Muslims who live in the west should honour their obligation to keep the peace and security and preserve the integrity of society. We must develop the sense of belonging to the western Land, for there is no such thing of Muslim land. Every land is the land of God. Embrace the land that embraces you. Imam Ali said that “the land which does not carry you abandon it”. If your rights, dignity and sustenance are maintained and provided by the land you live in then cherish it and protect it, for it is a basic moral and human obligation. No one can advice otherwise; no parents or any religious leader can advice otherwise. The holy Quran orders Muslims to return goodness with goodness as it is stated in Chapter 55:60:

“55:60 Could the reward of good be aught but good? ”

هَلْ جَزَاء الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الْإِحْسَانُ (55:60

Muslims in the west must not betray the trust which was given to them by the western Societies. All Muslims live in the west are in fair conditions and their rights are being preserved, in comparison to that of their native land. There is no other option in this equation of goodness but to return goodness, done to us, by goodness; in preserving the trust; in protecting peace, stability, and integrity of society. In doing that , in essence we are protecting our own integrity; our own peace; our own future, for we share the same land with them.

I leave you at this note until next time

The Human Soul and its Dimensions

The Human Soul and its Dimensions

Al-Nafs and its dimensions

Qur’anic Perspective

“By a soul (Nafs) and how He fashioned it (sawwaha). 7 and how He inspired it (alhamaha) with its immorality (fujooraha) and with its piety (ta’qwaha) ! Truly successful is he who purifies it (Zakka-ha) * and truly lost is he who buries it (Das-sa-ha) 91:7-10”

The notion of soul or Nafs is the most mysterious notion of the human being. Throughout history this Notion has generated a great interest among all religions. In the Muslim literature there was some ambiguity around it and it was often confused, by reader, with the notion of “spirit” or “Ruh

Certainly there is a difference, from a Quranic perspective, between the two notions; the notion of “Ruh-spirit” and the notion of “Nafs-Soul” Continue reading

The Days of God

The days of God

Metaphysical Perspective

  وَذَكِّرْهُم بِأَيَّامِ اللَّه إِنَّ فِي ذَ‌ٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٍ شَكُورٍ

14:5 ..and teach them to remember the Days of Allah.” Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative.

Muslim Quran commentators offer various interpretations for the notion of “ayyamil-lah, the days of Allah” but the most prevailing  opinion refers to as “God’s final judgment of man on the Day of Resurrection”. However, such opinion is not conclusive and may be far fetched simply because the Quran often refer to the notion of the “Day of Judgement” in plain words and in the singular form, such as “the day of resurrection”, “the Day of Deen-Judgement”, etc.. But the format in this verse came in the plural which may suggest to more profound meaning than it is rendered by our Quran commentators.

Looking at this notion from a higher understanding the “Days of Allah” has more profound meaning. I believe that there is an ontological relationship between the “Days of Allah” and the notion of “patience and gratefulness”. When a person becomes the embodiment of patience and gratefulness then in essence this person is living the “Days of Allah”. So those moments, segment of time, hours, day, or days in which we live the attributes of patience and gratefulness, are the “Days of Allah”

The “Days of Allah” is a spiritual state of the heart. A state of being in which we are enabled to bring the best out of us in pursuing  the acts of goodness in serving the human cause.

Furthermore, in light of some comments stated below, I would like to elaborate on my short essay above. The prophetic hadiths mentioned below, Sahih bukhari,  which states that the prophet gave a definition for the “days of Allah” as being “the bounties of Allah”. In addition another prophetic hadith according to  the renowned Quran commentators, such as, Zamakhshari, who states that; on the authority of Ibn Abbas, the prophet said that “the days of Allah” are “His Blessings and His trials”

Accordingly, now we have two meanings in reference to the “days of Allah” offered by Prophet Muhammad, according to Sahih bukhari, and Zamakhshari. And these two meanings are, “Bounties as well well as Trials.

Now if were to take the first meaning offered by shaih bukhari, which state that the “days of Allah” to be “the bounties or the blessings” and  see how does it agree with the findings mentioned above.

When God bestows His blessings upon a true believer then he or she would be grateful to God. In other words, the expression of gratefulness by the believer is true manifestation of true faith from within. A true conviction in the omnipotence and might of the Giver of his or her bounties. When a believer is always grateful to God then such believer is continuously conscious of the presence of God and His bounties which are everywhere. And such believer has a deep conviction that God will bring all mankind back to stand before Him on the Day of Judgement. A true believer is always conscious of the Divine presence every moment every hour, and every day. Hence a true believer’s days are passing in the presence of God. There is no day that passes where the believer is conscious of God. And that is how the verse above implies that we are reminded to live our days in the presence of God. When we help others we are conscious of the divine presence then we are living the day in the presence of  God; when we spend our days in the pursuant of goodness then we are in essence living the “Days of God”   Furthermore, the same kind of approach in respect of the second meaning offered by the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) which is to be as “Trials” according to Zamakhshari as stated below.

Further, read the full verse, the Days of Allah clearly refers to particular, special days of worship given to the people of Musa. No need for tenious connections

Thank you for your input. As I mentioned in my post that there are various opinions regarding the ‘Days of Allah” and I only rendered “the most prevailing opinion” However, the hadith you stated is another opinion. In addition there is another opinion to the one you stated, rendered by several renowned Quran commentators, such as, Zamakhshari, who states that; on the authority of Ibn Abbas, “the days of Allah” are His Blessings and His trials وعن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما: نعماؤه وبلاؤه- . These opinions are related to the exoteric meaning of the Quran. Having said that, none of these opinions are final and further contemplation  is a virtue supported the Quran.
